Known as “ Roof of the World” Ladakh display astounding varieties of mountain ranges along with serene lakes and river basins and numerous rivers. Innocent beauty of Ladakh is mesmerizing and addictive and there is no better way to expose the raving beauty than to trek through it.

Spread across the ancient trade routes, Ladakh has numerous trails that connects the remote villages. Ladakh treks are no fun, it’s difficult because even the easiest treks of Ladakh and Zanskar starts at over 4,800m. One has to acclimatise well before venturing into it. Trekker spend a few days in Leh, gentle walks to nearby villages and get used to high altitude environment before the expedition. There are ample options of trekking. Ladakh offers number of treks ranging from 3 days to 24 days. some of them passes through Zanskar valley while some of them leads to Himachal Pradesh. Food supplies should be carried from Leh because en route there are few places to eat and stay. It is better to carry a small liquid stove.

Ascent Of Stok Kangri – This is a moderate trek can easily complete in 4 to 5 days. The ascent is on 6120m over the village of stok. There are plenty of time is needed for acclimatization.. starting from Stok, the trail passes through green pastures then rugged desert to the Stok Kangri base camp at 4800m. From here there are two choices: one to complete the trek in one gruelling day, or take another day to complete with more acclimatization at Stok Kangri High Camp.

  • Stok Kangri Base Camp to Stok – 4-5 hours

Spituk To Markha Valley and Hemis

This is a moderate trek of 8 to 9 days to Spituk Gompa. If you want to save time you can take taxi to Rumbuk or you can start your trek from Stok or from the west bank of the Zanskar River, crossing by cable way. From Spituk, the route follows the Zingchen Valley for two days to Ganda La (4920m), with a one-day acclimatization stop en route. It is steady descent to the Markha valley and the village of Skiu. You can stay at the Parachute tented camps that offer basic facility. An alternative is to sleep at the homestays springing up along the route.

  • Zingchen to Yurutse and camp –4-5 hrs
  • Yurtse to Skiu via Ganda La – 6-7 hrs
  • Skiu to Markha – 7-8 hrs
  • Markha to Hankar – 7-8 hrs
  • Hankar to Nimling – 6-7 hrs
  • Nimlang to Shang Sumdo via Kongmaru La – 6 hrs
  • Shang Sumdo to Martselang –4-5 hrs
  • Martselang to Hemis – 3-4 hrs

Lamayuru To Chiling Via Dung Dung La

Compare to other two this one is the easiest. Starts from Lamayuru Gompa traverses the Zanskar Range and returns to the Indus Valley via Zanskar river takes 5 days to complete. It passes through some of the difficult ridges like Prinkiti La (3750m) and Konze La(4950m). Konze La is a base camp where a day is required for acclimatization. From Konze La there are impressive views of the east Karakoram Range before a short descent to Sumdo Chinmu. The trail further ascent to Dun Dung La (4870m) offering knee trembling views of the Zanskar Range and river. One day is required to complete the journey to Chiling.

  • Wanla to Konze La base camp – 4-5 hrs
  • Konze La base camp to Sumdo Chinmu via Konze La – 5-6 hrs
  • Sumdo Chinmu to Dung Dung La base camp –3 hrs
  • Dung Dung La base camp to Chiling via Dung Dung La
