Understanding the Three Major Airports of the Bay Area
But there are other deciding factors besides the airline. Remember that there are three major airports in the San Francisco Bay Area.
SFO (San Francisco International)
Oakland
San Francisco’s main airport, SFO, is conveniently located nearby. However, for better fares, you should typically consider Oakland, which is conveniently accessible via BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), or even San Jose Airport, which is further south near Silicon Valley.
San Jose does not have as convenient a transit route, so you will need to take an Uber or find another way to travel to San Francisco. It takes roughly an hour to drive from San Jose to San Francisco, with decent traffic. You can also take Caltrain from San Jose to SF, making the San Jose airport a more attractive choice.
However, I rarely travel to San Jose. Looking at SFO and Oakland airports are excellent possibilities, with Oakland sometimes being less expensive. I adore flying OAK!
Comparing Rates and Schedules
Now, let’s look at some genuine flights around three weeks out from the date I’m looking for. A little extra notice can usually result in better deals.
As of this writing, Spirit is offering a direct flight from New York City to Oakland for $185 round fare.
That’s a great deal for a cross-country vacation. If you choose Oakland Airport over SFO and Spirit as your low-cost carrier, you can find better deals while traveling into San Francisco.
Which day’s flight tickets are the cheapest?
In addition to selecting a reputable airline and airport, it’s critical to get your time correct. Remember that San Francisco is a popular business location for travelers in the technology industry. That means that if you go on Mondays (the start of the business week) or Fridays (when business travelers return home), you will likely pay more.
Midweek is an ideal time to travel into or out of the Bay Area. If your travel dates are flexible. Look for flights on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. These are typically the cheapest days.
What is the least expensive month for a flight to San Francisco?
In addition to the day of the week. Your timing throughout the year is also important. The peak season in the San Francisco Bay Area is typically May to September. Flights during that season are typically more expensive.
Conversely, flying during the winter (particularly in February) can result in low-cost flights. San Francisco has very consistent weather throughout the year. Winter is cooler than other months, but there is still much to do in the Bay Area (just remember to take a rain jacket because it is the region’s rainy season).
