The Route:

The road trip from Srinagar to Leh would cover almost 420 kms; passing through some of the highest mountain passes in the world, this will certainly be one journey which can never really go unremembered. The course travels along the popular Highway of Srinagars, Leh also known as National highway 1 which traverses through Ladakh range defining Kashmir Valley and high altitude deserts.

Beginning from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir; riders can meet such soothing beauty as Dal Lake with its green surroundings. After this, the road climbs gently passing through lovely hamlets crossing apple orchards and terraced fields. Entering the wild, our journey has now begun.

Challenges and Highlights:

The major difficulty of this trip is the mountainous passes that clutter around. At approximately 11,500 feet above ground level is the first major pass that sits in- the Zoji La Pass. The tight twisty road, unpredictable by the moods of nature, forces even experienced riders to limit their speed and test reflexes.

However, as we get to higher altitudes the terrain changes dramatically into bare mountain slopes gray with dust and sand waste land strewn on rocky stretches going from valley after secluded basin for long distances. The upcoming daunting milestone is the Fotu La Pass that towers over 13,00ft above ground level. The air becomes thinned, the temperature goes down and round after round every road change leads to a new challenge.

But in the midst of all that, there are a myriad of moments when one simply cannot take it anymore; those instances where beauty and wonderment reign supreme. The glimmering blue waters of Pangong Lake, surrounded by high mountains stun the riders. The Nubra Valley is crowned by surreal landscapes, camels displaying double humps and sand dunes spared of time.

Cultural Immersion:

The trip from Srinagar to Leh goes beyond nature’s beauty and is a cultural journey as well. Throughout the trip, every rider is able to see different communities with their lifestyles controlled by traditions adopted over many years. Along the way are a number of compact and distinct cultures which can be visited from bustling markets in Leh where traders come to barter, to utterly isolated monasteries nestled on remote cliff tops.

Among the many highlights is Kargil, a historic town forever remembered in history for its contribution to one of India- Pakistan’s several conflicts; that which took place between in 1990. In it, riders can pay respect to the great warriors who sacrificed their lives guarding the country and enjoy rich culture melting here through this important outpost.

The Warmth of Hospitality:

Although the region is characterized by rocky terrain and extreme weather, the hospitality of this place knows no boundaries. Gentle homesteads in distant hamlets to straw roofed guest houses, perched on mountain slopes – no matter where one stays in the area-they are welcomed into warm and hospitable local homes. A few drops of butter tea with a Ladakhi family or exchange stories, these lived interactions are as enriching as the scenery.
